Constructability is a term that was originally defined by the Constructability Task Force of the Construction Industry Institute in 1986 and has been used routinely by construction and engineering industries. Due to the inherent differences in the concept of construction and design processes, the history of the term, and its former and current uses, were reviewed. This article attempts to define the term constructability as it relates to buildability and constructibility (with an I), and its usefulness in architectural building design processes. In addition, six major factors that influence constructability implementation during the design process are identified: project objectives, contracting strategies, construction knowledge and experience, site layout for construction, design details and specifications, and the role of the construction or project manager.
